Reason for referral
The reason for the referral of this family was initially activity-based support to allow parents to attend an external course.
Further to the original referral staff noticed further behavioural and relationship issues between the three boys which needed to be addressed to further develop their relationship. Which when approaching the parents and social worker this was agreed.
Aims and objectives
We were aiming to improve communication skills between the boys, build positive relations between the brothers improving their social skills and teamwork, which will also develop their life skills.
What plans/strategies have been implemented?
We have implemented activity-based planned activities, on the first session we planned with the boys activities that they would like to do over the course of their time with ABL, they asked if we could do some physical activity such as playing on park, teamwork based activities such as making their tea and baking linking with life skills, we have also worked on using their creativeness and imagination when writing stories from scratch individually and as a team.
What resources have been considered for use/used?
Community Centre Building
Arts and Crafts equipment
Food and Drinks
How effective has the intervention been?
There has been significant progression between the brothers using teamwork to make their own tea with supervision from staff. This also develops a life skill for them.
There has been a significant reduction in the aggressive behaviours between all the brothers and there has been a positive improvement in all relationships between the brothers working together.
The main reduction in aggressive behaviours and positive relationship which has been built has been between brothers HB & GB. There has also been a better understanding of each child emotional understanding of each other.
Future Plans
No future plans for the family, after a meeting with the social worker, the LA had decided that ABL had met the outcomes set for the family and therefore the LA set a contract completion date.
Key Learning Points
During our initial 10 weeks contact which had a clear purpose which was to allow parents to attend course. ABL identified significant behavioural needs which led to an extension. Behaviours included: Aggressive behaviour towards each other, lack of understanding of emotions, arguing and interrupting each other.
Psychological formulations need to take place by clinical psychologist on H & J to allow further understanding and be able to tailor further.
Overall Outcome
Parents able to attend parenting courses.
Children more able to tolerate each other, be brothers.
School transition and more able to deal with school issues.
